Oscar Winning Production Designer, Paul Sylbert, Dies at the Age of 88

Paul Sylbert, who became very much popular after his win in Oscars for the best Production Designer for “Heaven Can Wait”.

As per as reports, he died on November 19 and he was 88 years old.

Hawk Koch, the producer who worked with him on several projects said “Sylbert was a very kind hearted and down to earth person. He was amazingly talented and never have seen such personality in life”.

“he apart from work loved to a lot of things like music, literature, partying with friends etc”, he added.

Paul’s brother, Richard Sylbert, who died in the year 2002 and was also a production designer, was almost identical to him, as they both were twins.

He started his career with TV shows in the 1950s and later moved to movies. He also worked as a set decorated for a CBS series named “Suspense” in his early days.

Paul was married to a costume designer, Althea Sylbert, who worked with him in several movies. Apart from that, she also worked with his twin brother.

For a 1981 movie, Nighthawks, he also received the credit of story writing, which became very popular in those days.

Born and brought up in Brooklyn, he and his twin brother Richard, also fought the Korean War

He attended Pennsylvania-based Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and later in the year 2004, he joined the same School of Art as a faculty for Film and Media Arts.

Well, in 2009, he also received the Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Art Directors Guild.
